Reading Pathways Maggie Nelson Maggie Nelson is better known now than ever before, but shes not well-known enough that her most ardent fans (myself included) are ready to stop evangelizing on her behalf. For some readers, shes famous, but for others, shes an unknown or perhaps a little too intimidating to approach. Shes hard to categorize. She writes poetry and nonfiction, but those terms dont really capture the strangeness of her books. Her work is genre-bending and experimental, but only in the most exciting and refreshing of ways. She will make your mind explode, but she will leave you not caring that your mind is in pieces on the floor. Its hard to say why Maggie Nelson is having a moment, but The Argonauts, which she published last year, was a success. Theres something about her intelligence, her openness and vulnerability on the page, and her subject matter including gender and sexuality, new forms of family, suffering and loss, violence, and the power of writing that make her a strong voice for our times. I was lucky enough to get to see her in person last fall at an event at the Center for Fiction that she did with Heidi Julavits and Sarah Manguso. It was a highlight of my year (if you follow that link and watch the video of the event, you can see the back of my head; I had a front-row seat!). The event was full, and the energy in the room was electrifying. She has made many readers fall in love with her books, and if you read her, the chances are good you will fall in love too. So here are my recommendations for the order in which to read her: First, Bluets, from 2009. This is the book that many Maggie Nelson fans-to-be discover first. Its made up of short essayistic, poetic bits, organized in a numbered list. Her subjects are many and include the color blue, in which she finds so much interest and meaning it will take your breath away. Its also about suffering: she writes about a friend who became a quadriplegic after an accident, and she tells about her heartbreak after a difficult break-up. The book is meditative and philosophical, but also vulnerable and personal. Here is her first line: Suppose I were to begin by saying I had fallen in love with a color. Next, Jane: A Murder and The Red Parts, published in 2005 and 2007, respectively. The Red Parts is being reissued by Graywolf Press this April. These books work well together because they are two different approaches to the same subject: the murder of her aunt Jane Mixer in 1969, four years before Nelson was born. Jane: A Murder is a book of poetry, although it has sections of prose as well, in the form of pieces of Janes journals. The poetry is beautiful, very approachable and moving. Even if you are someone who doesnt read much poetry, you will find this one engaging. The Red Parts is another look at the murder, this time in prose, after the re-opening of the investigation in 2005. It tells about the trial of a new suspect, about how the murder affected Nelsons family, about Nelsons struggles with what she calls Murder Mind, and about our cultures troubling obsession with brutal murders of young white women. Its not necessary to read Jane: A Murder and The Red Parts together each one can be fruitfully read on its own but they make a great pairing. Finally, read The Argonauts, Nelsons most challenging and most inventive work. This book is both philosophical and highly personal. She tells the story of her relationship with Harry Dodge, who identifies as gender-fluid, and her experience with pregnancy and childbirth. The Argonauts is a meditation on identity and the things that shape it and tear it apart. She quotes liberally from the writers who shaped her thinking, so it will send you to the library and bookstore in pursuit of all her references. But as thoughtful and heady as the book is, its also grounded in her personal, physical experiences of the world. Theres no one quite like Maggie Nelson writing right now. I think we are lucky to have her.

How to Read Shakespeare Dialogue Aloud

On first sight, Shakespeare dialogue may seem daunting. Indeed, the idea of performing a Shakespeare speech fills many young actors with fear. However, you should remember that Shakespeare was an actor himself and wrote for fellow performers. Forget criticism and textual analysis because everything an actor needs is right there in the dialogue – you just need to know what you’re looking for. Shakespeare Dialogue Every line of Shakespeare dialogue is packed with clues. Everything from the imagery, structure, and use of punctuation is an instruction for the actor - so stop looking at just the words in isolation! Clues in the Imagery Elizabethan theater didn’t rely on scenery and lighting to create a scene, so Shakespeare had to carefully choose language that created the right landscapes and moods for his plays. For example, read aloud this passage from A Midsummer Night’s Dream where Puck describes a place in the forest: I know a bank whereon the wild thyme blows,Where oxlips and nodding violet grows. This speech is loaded with words to suggest the dream-like quality of the text. This is a clue from Shakespeare on how to read the speech. Clues in the Punctuation Shakespeares use of punctuation was very different – he used it to signal how each line should be delivered. Punctuation forces the reader to pause and slows down the pace of the text. Lines without punctuation naturally seem to gather momentum and emotional energy. Full stop (.) Full stops naturally bring the sense and energy of the line to a close.Infrequent commas (,)A comma forces a slight pause in delivery to reflect a tiny development or shift in the character’s thought process.For example, read aloud Malvolio’s line from Twelfth Night: â€Å"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.† Did you notice how the commas forced you to pause and split this sentence into three parts?Repetition of commas (,)Commas can also cause a line to gather in emotional intensity. If you see lots of commas together, evenly spaced and splitting the lines into small snappy chunks, then this is Shakespeare’s way of asking you to emotionally invest in the dialogue and build up its rhythmic intensity, as in this example from King Lear: ... No, no, no life!Why should a dog, a horse, a rat have life,And thou no breath at all? Thou’it come no more;Never, never, never, never, never.Colon (:) A colon signals that the next line should sound as if it is responding to the previous line, as in Hamlet’s â€Å"To be, or not to be: that is the question.† Do Not Add Punctuation If you’re reading aloud a speech written in verse, you may feel the need to pause at the end of each line. Do not do this unless the punctuation specifically requires you to do so. Try to carry the sense of what you’re saying into the next line and you’ll soon discover the correct rhythm of the speech. You should think of a Shakespeare play as a blueprint for performance. All the clues are there in the text if you know what you’re looking for – and with a little practice, you’ll soon discover that there’s nothing hard about reading Shakespeare’s dialogue aloud.

The managers put in charge of these departments fail to realize the importance of change management and that different teams warrant different approaches to management and distinct cultures since members are different and experiences also differ. Due to the failure to understand their role in developing the team and defining roles, the implicat ions include information asymmetries and lack of objectivity which in the long run leads to failure of the team (Boller, 2005). This case study report aims at analyzing teamwork at Google and the role played by management to enhance the cooperation. Background Google is one of the giants of the technology arena and is highly rated by its users all over the world (Cowan, 2012). It is a publicly traded multi- national company based in the US. It is hard to believe that the company started operations in a garage (Witzel Warner, 2013). Google specializes in internet based transactions that involve search engines, software development, networking, communication, clouding, and advertising among others. Organization owns over one million servers all over the world which process over one billion searches in one day. Their mission is to enable the flow of information all over the world and make it useful and acceptable. Google has in the recent past been interested in teamwork and how it can be improved (Lencioni, 2013). The company was an ideal choice of strategies since it acknowledges the value of team works since the formation of the business itself was based on a team of two Stanford University students, known as Larry Sage and Sergey Brin. In the year 2012, the company established a project known as Aristotle to study the aspect of teamwork that was aimed at providing information about the norms that drive the success of a team. The company managers believed that by understanding the basics and behaviours in social and political aspects of teamwork, they would be able to develop the perfect team that would work together to develop the company products (Tyler, 2015).The survey was an analysis of over a hundred teams all found in the enterprise, in a period of one year. Most of the useful groups were seen to have very stable social relations even when not in the teams while others showed too much formality. Identification of issues and problems From the case study, there are weaknesses in the team effectiveness model of Matts team that are inhibiting the overall performance. Problems arise in the context of the group whereby there is poor leadership, poor evaluation of worker members and hot climate with no established trust. According to Schwalbe (2007), the team is set as a group of people who come together to achieve a common goal. For this to be possible there needs to be a clear set of relevant and attainable goals whereby each member of the team understands why he or she is a member of the team. Lack of objectivity leads to confusion and a deficiency in focus, that may, in turn, result in a lack of seriousness (Beck, 2004). The team; therefore, does not understand their role; hence, produce poor results. The second problem identified is the work design which includes the composition of the group in terms of skills recruited; the task identity and task significance .The survey showed that the members cannot comprehend their identity and significance. This may cause lack of proper motivation for team members that may hinder their effectiveness. It is mistaken most of the time that workers only work to gain monetary compensation which is not the case (Lencioni, 2013). The members of the team may be de-motivated and thus lack effectiveness. Another problem is that the manager does not create time for the team and also has a history of being too friendly so as to gain favor among team members. This scenario is evidenced by the engineer in the previous engineer who could talk and not give others time to speak; the manager did not do anything about that, and so this may also be an issue in this team. There is a lack of proper communication on both sides since the team does not communicate their problems and Matt does not check with them to see if they are okay, he just leaves them to do their work. The three problems are caused by the poor management of the team (Malhotra,2000).The manager may be a bit experienced in the field but does not adapt to change. All teams are different in composition, role, and behaviours, so a manager needs to adjust to the various dynamics of team building. The fact that the team members in Matt's team do not understand their roles shows that the team leader is not actively involved in the group and did not define the goals. Henry Fayol formulated a theory that is meant to guide the management of groups and teams (Malhotra, 2000). The theory talks about effective planning, organization and a good communication system which is lacking in the team setting. Belbin's theory of team building suggests that the behavior of team members is shaped by how well they understand their roles in the team (Kaptan, 2002). According to Malhotra (2000), the theory of action-centered leadership by John Adair states that for a team leader to be effective then he needs to define the goals and objectives of the team and be an active participant of the work, making frequent consultations on progress and offering counsel. It also proves that there are information asymmetries since Matt thought that the team was efficient, yet it had weaknesses. The manager's dis-involvement has led to little motivation about training and complimenting the workers constantly to tell them they are doing a good job. According to Tyler (2015), the theory of motivation by Abraham Marlow states various categories that an employee needs to satisfy; they range from basic needs that can be satisfied by pay but also involve other factors like self-esteem and need for recognition which the manager apparently does not provide. McClelland's Human Motivation Theory provides the third solution and states that the manager should understand his role as a figurehead, decision maker and also ensure to appreciate the efforts of the team as a whole and not individuals (Kaptan, 2002). Proposed solution The most important answer is the motivation of team members by the team manger. Most of the problems are just farfetched points that converge at motivation. Even the proper defining of goals acts as a motivator and the active participation of the team leader not to mention the management skills which are meant to organize the team. According to Adetule, (2011), most theories of team building emphasize on the motivation of team members since it is believed to be an essential ingredient to success. Recommendations One of the areas that need urgent attention is the manager playing his role as a leader and being more involved. Prevent Strategy and Fundamental British Value The direct governmental policy response to terrorist attack, because, most of the terrorist attacks, are believed to have been perpetrated by [G1]Islamist terrorist (fundamentalist), does give the impression that government has a significant Muslim problem in relation to attractions to violent extremism.[G2][G3][G4] The Labour government, in 2003, came up with a strategy to counter terrorism,[G5][G6] with the principal aim of protecting the public, preventing radicalisation, in response to the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.[G7][G8] The strategy also contains measures to prepare for an attack and pursue attackers.[G9] This was before, the coordinated multiple bombing that led to the death of 56 people in London, termed 7/7, because, it happened on the 7th of June 2005, Islamist terrorist were believed to be behind the [G10]attack[so11]. However, after the 7/7 bombing the government launched the specific prevent strategy, schools and educational institution were brought into it, more funding was allocated to it. The duty of preventing violent extremism and a duty of care to students at risk of radicalisation was given to schools. In 2011 Prevent Strategy was transformed with new power and detailed tasks for schools and universities, by the coalition government. Prominence was giving to sa feguarding; schools giving the duty of promoting balanced and wide-ranging curriculum. America: The Land of Opportunities In modern day society, a college degree leads to people making specific assumptions about an individual’s capabilities, which proceed to shape social generalizations that may assist or inhibit the success of an individual in the economic system or job market. Universal standards form throughout the job market as a result of those assumptions made about students who attend college that may not encourage a full understanding of an individual’s ability to perform his duties. The assumptions made about a college education demonstrate the general principles of reductionism, in which people follow a logical approach according to his observations. As reductionists correlate the type of college degree to an individual’s intelligence, the overdeterminist looks to consider an individual’s surroundings and experiences (which include the education received) while evaluating an individuals’ aptitude. This social process becomes apparent not only in my own person al life, as I reflect upon the way in which society views me because I attend Mount Holyoke college, but also through the characters’ lives in the films: Mississippi Masala and the Boiler Room. I look to reevaluate the importance that the job market places on a college education, as well as the consequential economic trap that follows from the construction of assumptions. Society assumes that people who attend prestigious universities are capable and astute individuals. After having told people that I go to Mount Holyoke College, I have had people expect that I am a capable and intelligent woman solely based on the university’s image. While serving at a restaurant over the summer, customers frequently treated me with more respect as they found o... ..., the amount of exceptions to those clearly laid out generalizations may appear minute and trivial now, but they could grow to a catastrophic level as the theory expands on a macro level and becomes an unquestionable mentality in the job market. By affirming assumptions throughout society, it will eventually lead to huge misconceptions about groups of people that may be completely unwarranted. Although it clarifies situations, its also minimizes the complexity and ignores truths that should be considered, for example, when evaluating an applicant in the job market. Also due to the simplicity and attractiveness in the logic, a perpetuating cycle evolves that intensifies the class processes. By offering me an opportunity simply on the basis that I attend Mount Holyoke, both Mount Holyoke alumni and society follow image and deny others chances through erroneous means.

But can this powerful yet simple creation have a drastic effect on how the new generation operates today? The entire world is rapidly becoming obsessed; everywhere you look you’re bound to see something related to the Internet. Search engines, texting, twittering, blogging; to name a few. We have all heard of at least one of those internet friendly applications. But can those applications become too friendly to the point where they are a distraction to the young mind? Can those applications hinder how the human brain functions? There are numerous arguments, views and statements regarding such an important question. Two writers that I researched share their opinions and views based off of how the internet has affected others intelligence today. These two writers go by the name of Nicholas Carr and Steven Pinker. Without having any knowledge of what the articles are about one only needs to read there titles to distinguish the differences between the two. Where as Nicholas Carr’s article is titled, â€Å"Does the Internet Make You Dumber? † Steven Pinker’s article is titled, â€Å"Mind over Mass Media†. Both writers have completely different types of titles but one can assume that they are responding to the same subject. After thoroughly reading both articles, Nicholas Carr and Steven Pinker have completely different views when it comes down to how the internet influences others. Firstly, Nicholas Carr addresses heavily how in fact the internet does make you dumber. All throughout the article he gives examples of studies aimed at showing how the internet doesn’t positively contribute to the brain at all. As stated from the article Nicholas Carr explains how â€Å"People who read text studded with links, comprehend less than those who read traditional linear text. How, people who watch busy multimedia presentation remember less than those who take in information in a more sedate and focused manner†. All of which are pretty apparent that the effect that the internet has on the mind is quite drastic. On the other hand, Steven Pinker’s article strongly disagrees at the fact that the internet affects the human brain. His defensive points primarily explain how without the internet a lot of today discoveries and new inventions wouldn’t be possible. Also he defends the fact that distraction or addiction is not a new phenomenon. Regardless of whether the internet is a popular utility or not, distraction would still be an occurring issue. It is quoted: â€Å"If electronic media were hazardous to intelligence, the quality of science would be plummeting. † Also, â€Å"Yes the constant arrival of information packets can be distracting or addictive, especially to people with attention deficit disorder. But distraction is not a new phenomenon. The solution is not to bemoan technology but to develop strategies of self-control as we do with every other temptation in life. † Steven Pinker is trying to get the reader to understand that the internet doesn’t essentially make you dumber but it does hinge at one’s attention span. Outside of the internet distractions are common everywhere. One can become distracted by their job, parents, work, internet, ect. Because of these interruptions Steven Pinker’s makes it known that all distractions require self-control. If one doesn’t have self control over an issue they will become addicted. Lastly my research wasn’t over. It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t get a third opinion to help provide some extra study. A third writer that I came across was a woman named Sherry Turkle. Sherry Turkle has written a popular novel titled â€Å"Alone Together†. In the novel Alone Together author Sherry Turkle explains a third completely different concern on how technology affects the average American. This concern is in regards to how individuals will end up alone together because technology has distanced face to face relationships. That society expects more from technology and less from each other. Over the years Sherry Turkle has examined how technology has jeopardized the true meaning of hands on communication. Although she does not mention how the internet may interfere with learning or brain capabilities she does still presents other exceptionally important factors. In conclusion, in comparison of the two primary articles that I researched I would ultimately have to agree with the Nicholas Carr piece. I feel as if the Nicholas Carr piece will convince more people. His article compared to Steven Pinker’s has a lot of legitimate studies and facts. His studies included one conducted at Cornell University, where they conducted the laptop experience, which compared the effect of students who studied utilizing the traditional method of the library and those who studied using the laptop for research, with the conclusion that those who studied using the library grades were higher; studies from Stanford where they conducted a multi-tasking trial, also, studies from the University of California in San Francisco where they conducted a brain experiment. Where, Steven Pinker’s article comes off as an opinion piece with little to no background information or supporting references. I would want to believe that the mind is in fact over mass media but Steven Pinker’s article doesn’t defend his title strongly at all. Thus, leaving me with the conclusion that the internet is a major distraction, can hinder how I use my brain properly, and can jeopardize my in person communication skills that I have available.

The Gods in “The Iliad” of Homer Character Analysis

In order to sum up the role or gods in the eternal masterpiece written by Homer, one may use the bright remark of the character of Shakespeare’s â€Å"King Lear†, which is the following â€Å"As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods; / they kill us for their sport†. This is the holy truth but only to a certain extent for the reason that the gods in â€Å"The Iliad† have solid connections with some of the mortal people (remember the special friendship between Odysseus and Athena?), especially when these people are their kids (consider Thetis and her grief for her son Achilleus). But at the same time, there is still something trivial about â€Å"The Iliad† gods and the way of life they keep to. It is made clear in the Book 1 feasting scene, in contrast to the intense struggle between mortals (Agamemnon and Achilleus). When reading about the gods pictured by Homer, one should remember several basic facts. First, they are all immortal creatures. In other words, their veins have no blood. They are full of ichor – the divine matter. To say more, they can live without food, giving preference to ambrosia and immortal nectar. At some point Homer’s gods even â€Å"eat†. But having no McDonalds nearby, they are satisfied with the sacrifice smoke coming from the burned animal fat, offered by mere mortals. In exchange for such offerings from people, the gods are ready to provide a lot of services for human beings (for instance, giving the desired victory in the athletic contests). One more thing to remember about the gods created by Homer is that they took the great Trojan War rather personally. Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, and Hera, the goddess of females, are against the Trojans for the silliest reason – because Paris found Aphrodite more gorgeous than them. The lord of the sea, great Poseidon is also opposed to Trojans because he is mad at Laomedon. An ancient Troy king enslaved him long time ago. Ares, the god of war, has taken the Trojans side. In other words, everyone has made his own choice. As for those, who are neutral, the king of all gods Zeus, the lord of the metal-working Hephaistos and finally the underworld kind Hades – all of them pick their sides depending on the occasion, for their own profit. The final aspect you should keep in mind when reading â€Å"The Iliad† by Homer is that even though these heavenly creatures are not bound by destiny, they still have to resign themselves to it anyway, just in order to keep the life of mere mortals in strict order.
